C’est le Bâlois Leonhard Euler (1707 – 1783) qui l’a découverte et l’a mentionnée dans un ouvrage paru en 1748, sans vraiment la démontrer. Ce qu’il y a évidemment de remarquable dans cette égalité a priori très simple, c’est la coprésence de cinq constantes mathématiques fondamentales. Voyons plutôt. 0 et 1 sont les éléments neutres respectifs de l’addition et de la multiplication. Pi ou π est un nombre transcendant désignant le rapport de la circonférence d’un cercle à son diamètre dans un plan euclidien. Rappelons qu’un nombre est dit transcendant s’il n’est racine d’aucun polynome à coefficients entiers. e est la base du logarithme naturel et se caractérise par la relation ln(e) = 1. Tout comme π, il s’agit d’un nombre transcendant. Quant à i, racine carrée de – 1, c’est l’unité imaginaire servant de base à la construction des nombres complexes. La relation qu’établit Euler entre ces cinq nombres utilise par ailleurs trois opérations fondamentales, l’addition, la multiplication et l’exponentiation. L’identité d’Euler peut se démontrer de plusieurs manières et bizarrement de façon assez aisée. En géométrie, on peut l’établir par la juxtaposition de triangles rectangles.
